No, filmmakers of all ages are welcome to submit their work. We encourage submissions from filmmakers at every stage of their careers, whether emerging or established. However, due to current regulations in the United Kingdom regarding film classification by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), our physical festival screenings are currently only open to audiences aged 18 and over. If anyone is attending the films screening they have to be over 18 to watch the film, this does not include the Live Q&A. If you have questions about eligibility or any future updates to our age policy, feel free to contact us at submissions@glowflarehorrorfestival.com.
Q.
How are films nominated for awards, and which awards are audience-voted?

Films can be nominated for multiple awards based on their style, execution, and content. Some awards are determined by a panel of industry creatives, while others are decided by audience on the day using a vote system.

Audience-voted awards include:

  • Audience Choice – Best Feature Film: Voted by attendees for their favourite feature-length horror film.
  • Audience Choice – Best Short Film: Voted by attendees for their favourite horror short.
  • Audience Choice – Scariest Film: Awarded to the film that genuinely terrified audiences the most.
  • Audience Choice – Most Entertaining Horror: Given to the most fun, engaging, or thrilling horror film.
Filmmakers may be required to submit a brief budget breakdown for verification.
Q.
What qualifies for Best Film Made for £50,000 or Less and Best Film Made for £1,000 or Less?
  • Best Film Made for £50,000 or Less: Open to feature and short films with a total budget of £50,000 or less.

Filmmakers may be required to submit a brief budget breakdown for verification.
Q.
Are there awards for different horror subgenres?
Yes! We have awards recognising specific subgenres, including:
  • Best Supernatural Horror (ghosts, demons, hauntings)
  • Best Psychological Horror (mental terror, paranoia, mind games)
  • Best Slasher Horror (killers, high body counts, creative deaths)
  • Best Creature Horror (monsters, cryptids, or non-human threats)
Q.
How is the Best Upcoming Filmmaker chosen?
This award is given to an emerging director or writer who demonstrates outstanding potential in horror filmmaking.
Q.
How do I choose the right category for my film?
Each category represents a different horror subgenre or style. If your film fits into multiple categories, choose the one that best represents its core theme and storytelling approach, there is no need to select multiple categories.
Q.
Can I submit to multiple categories?
No! Please select only one category. Categories are for internal organisation, and your film will still be considered for all eligible awards. Submitting to multiple categories does not increase your chances—it only increases costs. Save that budget for your next project!
Q.
How does the festival define horror subgenres?
The festival recognises a variety of horror subgenres, including:
  • Supernatural Horror: Features ghosts, demons, hauntings, possessions, or forces beyond human understanding.
  • Psychological Horror: Focuses on fear driven by paranoia, tension, and mental descent—without supernatural elements.
  • Found Footage Horror: Shot in a first-person or documentary-style format, including "discovered footage," "mockumentary horror," or "POV horror experiences."
  • Gore / Extreme Horror: Emphasises graphic violence, body horror, and intense, shocking imagery.
  • Monster / Creature Horror: Features terrifying creatures, from classic monsters to original creations.
  • Sci-Fi / Fantasy Horror: Blends horror with science fiction or fantasy themes, such as extraterrestrial threats or dark magic.
  • Slasher Horror: Revolves around a killer (human or otherwise) stalking and attacking victims, often in a suspenseful, violent manner.
  • Zombie Horror: Focuses on undead creatures, viral outbreaks, or apocalyptic survival against hordes of zombies.

If you're unsure which category best fits your film, feel free to contact us at submissions@glowflarehorrorfestival.com.

Films are evaluated by a panel of industry professionals, horror experts, and filmmakers based on the following criteria:
  • Storytelling: Narrative strength and originality.

  • Overall Impact: Emotional, thematic, and audience engagement.
High-scoring films are selected for screening, and awards are determined based on these evaluations. Some categories are also audience-voted.

The judging panel changes each year and consists of industry experts, filmmakers, and critics. For the latest updates, please visit our website or contact submissions@glowflarehorrorfestival.com.
Q.
Can I submit a work-in-progress, and can I update my submission later?
Yes, you can submit a work-in-progress, but:
  • Final Deadline: A completed version must be submitted by the final deadline.
  • Submission Materials: Include details on the film’s current state and planned updates.

Updating Your Submission: Edits can be made via FilmFreeway. If you need to notify us of changes, please email submissions@glowflarehorrorfestival.com with your submission ID. Final edits must be completed before the final deadline.
Q.
What are the technical requirements for the submitted films?
When submitting your film through FilmFreeway, please ensure it meets the following technical requirements to guarantee the best screening quality and compliance with the platform's standards:
  • File Format: FilmFreeway accepts video uploads in MP4 (H.264 codec preferred), MOV, or AVI formats. Ensure that your file is optimized for online viewing without compromising quality.
  • Resolution: A minimum resolution of 1080p (1920x1080 pixels) is recommended to maintain high visual quality. Films submitted in 4K (3840x2160 pixels) are also supported and will be screened in the highest resolution available.
  • Aspect Ratio: While any aspect ratio is accepted, films will be displayed in a 16:9 (widescreen) format during the festival. Please ensure your film is formatted to prevent unintended cropping or letterboxing during playback.
  • Audio: Ensure your film has clear, well-mixed audio. Stereo sound is the minimum requirement, though surround sound (5.1 or 7.1) is highly recommended for the best auditory experience. Check that all dialogue, sound effects, and music are properly balanced.
  • Subtitles: English subtitles are mandatory for all non-English films. These should be embedded within the video file or provided as a separate SRT file. We recommend adding subtitles for films with strong accents or rapid dialogue to ensure accessibility.
  • Duration: Your film must be under 40 minutes in length, including all credits, in accordance with FilmFreeway's horror film category limits.
  • Frame Rate: The preferred frame rate is 24 fps (frames per second), though 25 fps or 30 fps are also acceptable. Make sure the frame rate remains consistent throughout your film to avoid playback issues.
  • Bitrate: A high bitrate is advised for better image quality. For 1080p, aim for 10-20 Mbps, and for 4K, a bitrate of 50-100 Mbps is recommended. Ensure your file size meets FilmFreeway's upload limits.
  • Compression: Avoid over-compressing your video file to prevent artifacts and maintain high visual quality. FilmFreeway supports files up to 10 GB, so consider this when preparing your submission.
  • DCP (Digital Cinema Package): If your film is selected, you may need to provide a DCP for theatrical screenings. While we can assist with creating a DCP if needed, we strongly recommend that you prepare your own to ensure it meets your intended audience’s needs.
Please also review FilmFreeway's specific guidelines for file uploads to ensure your submission is compliant. If you need any assistance or have further questions regarding these technical specifications, contact us at submissions@glowflarehorrorfestival.com.
